SOUTHERN OHIO: Ground Broken for New Trend in Nursing Care

[Episcopal Retirement Homes] Episcopal Retirement Homes (ERH), an organization affiliated with the Diocese of Southern Ohio, broke ground on June 10 for Deupree Cottages, a $7 million, 2.1-acre development in the Hyde Park/Oakley area of Cincinnati.

The Right Rev. Thomas E. Breidenthal, Bishop of Southern Ohio and a member of ERH's board of directors, officiated at the groundbreaking.

According to a news release from ERH, Deupree Cottages will launch a new trend in nursing care in Cincinnati called "person-centered care."

Person-centered care will move nursing care away from the traditional, institution-based model to a holistic approach that provides a place for seniors to have the freedom to choose how they will live each day.

Deupree Cottages will initially include two buildings of 10,000 square feet, each providing residences for twelve persons.  Each "household" includes two suites for couples and single bedrooms, as well as a hearth room, den, open kitchen and dining room.

Doug Spitler, Chief Executive Officer of ERH, said that the traditional model of nursing care was patterned after the institutional hospital and that over the years concerns have been raised about residents' comfort, privacy and individuality.

"After self-examination, we realized that no matter how well we are already serving those who need 24-hour supportive care, we needed to make it better," said Spitler.  "The past model has hindered residents from living lives full of freedom, choice and purpose."

Residents of the Deupree Cottages will have the freedom to make their own schedules and choose activities and meal plans, he said.

Deupree Cottages are being constructed on the campus of Deupree House, an existing ERH facility that includes 142 senior apartments, a state-of-the art wellness center, complete with a heated, indoor pool and spa, exercise facilities, event center and chapel.
