CONNECTICUT: Diocese settles property suit with Bristol parish

[Diocese of Connecticut] The Episcopal Diocese of Connecticut has resolved its legal dispute relating to Trinity Church in Bristol.

Bishop Suffragan James E. Curry announced May 28 that the Rev. Stanley C. Kemmerer, priest-in-charge appointed by the diocese, has taken charge of the Trinity property on behalf of the parish. The lawsuit that had been initiated about a year ago to keep the parish in the diocese will be withdrawn shortly, according to the release.

Curry noted that some members of the congregation had chosen to join a different church.

"While we regret their departure, we wish them well in their spiritual journey and pray that Christ will be always with them," he said.

He also expressed his confidence and happiness that others in the congregation will remain in the Episcopal Church under Kemmerer's continuing leadership.

Curry, filling in for diocesan Bishop Andrew Smith who is on sabbatical, said he is relieved that the dispute had been resolved.

"It's good to have this chapter behind us," he said in the statement. "Now we can all return to the true work of the church of representing and serving Christ in our communities."
