[Episcopal News Service, Canterbury] Bishops Nathan Baxter of Central Pennsylvania and Bruce Caldwell of Wyoming offer the following Daily Account for July 22 at the 2008 Lambeth Conference in Canterbury.

We started with Bible Study: John 6: 1-14 and 25-59: Jesus said to them, I am the bread of life.

The Eucharist also carried that theme through the prayers, music and the sermon. The Eucharist today was celebrated by the Province of Central Africa.

In our Bible study, we are moving into real depth of conversation. The sense of trust and context of trust is growing, to include talking about areas in our ministry for which we need prayer. The groups have been generous in talking about our struggles and our joys, and we are praying for our ministries. Trust is being formed and honesty is moving to deeper levels each day. Sameness and differences are being addressed. Perspectives in the Bible study are diverse, theologically and culturally.

The focus of the Indaba group was Proclaiming the Good News -- the bishop and evangelism. The Indaba groups continue to get interesting.

The Indaba group is intended to have deep and rich conversation. The groups are beginning to form their own questions. We are beginning to have ownership in our Indaba group, which opens the way for future conversation. The Indaba group, even though not as intimate as the Bible study group, assumes the idea of community. That's one of the gifts that this model is giving us. We are at a level of respect and trust in which we can talk about hard issues. Ecumenical guests are fully participating in this discussion.

The afternoon was self-select groups. There was a full selection with much diversity, balance and broad offerings. The self-select is a good idea, because it gives us opportunities to continue what we have had during the Indaba groups, in deepening Bible study, and exploring evangelism and many issues.
